The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will conduct a safety review of the Taishan nuclear power plant before it goes into operation next year, a FactWire report said.
The news agency had earlier reported that the first two reactors at the plant 130-kilometres west of Hong Kong had been sealed, despite safety concerns about their components.
FactWire has now reported that mainland authorities have requested the IAEA to conduct the review, and a performance report is expected to be delivered before the plant opens later in 2017.
The news came as Taishan's owner and operator, China General Nuclear Power Group, faces questions about the safety of the plant.
Last April, French authorities discovered problems with the pressure vessel of a plant using European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) technology. The components were supplied by French company Areva.
FactWire had earlier reported that the pressure vessels at the Taishan nuclear power plant – which also uses EPR technology – had been produced by a subsidiary of Areva. But the news agency now says that it has learnt that one of the pressure vessels was made by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in Japan while the other was manufactured on the mainland.
