Former student leader Andrew To has criticised young people boycotting Saturday evening's June 4 candlelight vigil at Victoria Park, saying the move essentially makes them no different from Beijing loyalists.

To was head of the Federation of Students when the massacre took place in 1989.

But the head of the Chinese University's student union, Ernie Chow, hit back at the remark.

He told an RTHK programme that students simply do not agree with the vigil organisers that Hongkongers should promote democracy for the mainland.

University students were planning their own events to mark the crackdown on the mainland’s pro-democracy movement 27 years ago.
