The director of water supplies, Enoch Lam, is facing calls to resign after an independent commission of inquiry heavily criticised the department for trying to shed responsibilities in the lead-water scandal at a number of public housing estates.
Lam did not respond directly, saying only that he would "reflect and review" the incident, and that he had undertaken to carry out recommendations put forward by the commission.
Democratic Party legislator, Helena Wong, had accused him of being insincere when he apologised on Tuesday. For his part, Lam said the accusation made his heart sink because the Water Supplies Department had been working hard to rectify the problems.
He said the authorities were willing to conduct another round of water tests, but they first have to decide on a suitable sampling protocol.
But Lam stopped short of saying whether the drinking water at all public housing estates will be tested as recommended by the commission.
