Thousands of people have descended on Tim Mei Avenue in Tamar to join a mass sit-in in what organisers have now dubbed "Occupy Admiralty".

The Federation of Students, which called on people to join its protest for an indefinite period, estimates that 50,000 people are now taking part. Police have warned that the gathering is an illegal assembly.

The mass sit-in follows Friday night's storming of Civic Square outside the government headquarters by students and activists.

A clash between police and protesters has led to at least 34 people being injured. Seventy-four people have been arrested, including core members of the Federation of Students.

A spokeswoman for the Federation, Yvonne Leung, said they plan to stay in Admiralty until all the protesters arrested earlier are released.
