Occupy Central plans gathering at Chater Road on Oct 1
Occupy Central movement co-founder Reverend Chu Yiu-ming said he has applied to the police for permission to hold a 5,000-person-strong gathering at the pedestrian zone on Chater Road on October 1, Ming Pao Daily News reported Tuesday.
The gathering would be from 3pm until midnight, Chu said, without disclosing whether civil disobedience activity will be staged right after the event, according to the report.
Earlier, an application from the Civil Human Rights Front to use Victoria Park as the starting point for a pro-democracy rally on Oct 1 was rejected by the government’s Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The reason given was that the park won’t be free that day due to Chinese National Day celebratory events.
Chu did not say if Occupy Central’s civil disobedience activity will follow right after the planned gathering on Chater Road. Organizers will have to observe the response from the community and the effect of the ongoing classroom boycotts by students, he was quoted as saying.
Chu said the application for the Oct. 1 gathering was filed in the name of Hong Kong Democratic Development Network.
Chan Kin-man, another founder of Occupy Central, has called on citizens to voice their support for the pro-democracy group. He suggested that people can do four things –march along with the participants; bring participants water and food and take away garbage; monitor police officers and possibly give them flowers; and take photos of the activity and upload the pictures on social media.
