Ex-Law Society chief launches ‘Defend Central’ group
A group calling itself “Defend Central” was launched on Tuesday to defuse a planned civil disobedience campaign by Occupy Central.
It is made up of representatives from the tourism, transport, retail, finance and restaurant industries, as well as the office sector, government broadcaster RTHK reported.
The members have no political background and they are an ordinary group of people who care about Hong Kong, former Law Society head Ho Kwan-yiu, the group’s organizer, was quoted as saying.
They will post “No Occupy Central, defend our jobs” signs on taxis and tourist buses to send a message to the public about protecting and defending Central, he said.
Ho said the move is not aimed at “fighting society” but getting Occupy Central to understand that civil disobedience is not the only way to fight for genuine democracy.
He also urged protesting students to go back to school after expressing their views.
Occupy Central will have a big impact on the financial industry and will affect the stock market which could lead to a downgrade of Hong Kong’s credit rating, the report said, citing a representative from the financial sector.
