Twenty-three pan-democratic lawmakers have issued a joint statement, condemning what they said was the police's use of excessive force against student protesters on Friday night and Saturday morning.
They also called on Beijing to retract its conservative framework on political reform for Hong Kong, and to restart of the whole process of consultation on political reform in order to grant the SAR genuine universal suffrage.
However, the President of the Legislative Council, Tsang Yok-sing, rejected accusations that police used excessive force against protesters. He said had the students remained peaceful, the police would not have used pepper spray. He said there was a sudden rush of people into a closed off area, and the situation was out of control.
