Govt accused of suppression in liberal studies move
Hong Kong education authorities are proposing the scrapping of civic affairs subjects in the high school liberal studies curriculum, the Hong Kong Economic Journal reported Tuesday, citing a consultation paper.
The proposal also seeks to end a program relating to national identity development for new immigrants, minority ethnic groups and indigenous residents of the New Territories.
Some students accused the government of stifling their political rights after the success of the pro-democracy street protests in mobilizing young people.
Oscar Lai, a spokesman for student activist group Scholarism, said the move is politically motivated.
Lai said students should have a chance to learn civics and democracy through the curriculum, adding political involvement cannot be taken out of daily life.
Ng Wing-sze, a member of student group 21st Century Youth, said the move smacks of suppression to keep students away from politics.
Hong Kong Liberal Studies Teachers’ Association chairman Jacob Hui said the changes would eliminate overlapping aspects of the curriculum and is in line with recommendations from different sectors.
The government denied any political motive for the proposal.
