Students test out mainland immigration blacklist

Members of Hong Kong university student unions, especially those who are active in the pro-democracy protest movement, are likely to be barred from entering mainland China, Ming Pao Daily reported Tuesday, citing a survey run by the university students.

Wong Hau-lok, deputy editor of the Hong Kong Baptist University’s student union, said only three of the 20 students who took part in an experiment conducted by the union were allowed to enter the mainland on Monday. The test was done to verify a rumored blacklist that central authorities drew up against students who joined the Occupy campaign.

According to Wong, mainland immigration officers verbally informed the students that they were being barred entry, although they were not detained and their travel documents were not voided.

The officers also asked them not to try to enter the mainland again in the near future, according to the newspaper.

After representatives of several tertiary educational institutions and the student activist group Scholarism were refused entry to the mainland, Wong’s group has been arranging for a daily batch of 10 to 30 students to try to cross the border this week.

Wong urged students who have been refused entry to the mainland to report back to their school representatives, providing their names, political parties and other associations they belong to, and any records of arrest.
