HONG KONG: Hong Kong pro-democracy protest leader Joshua Wong will be released on bail, after he was charged on Thursday (Nov 27) with obstructing a public officer.
Hong Kong Dash reported that Wong will be released on bail for HK$500 (US$65) and will not be allowed back to Mong Kok district, one of the main protest sites. In a Facebook post on Thursday, Hong Kong Dash also reported that Wong's trial will begin in January next year. The post was shared on activist group Scholarism's Facebook page.
Wong and fellow student leader Lester Shum were arrested at Mong Kok on Wednesday soon after police began clearing a protest site there.
Hundreds of police on Wednesday pushed protesters back, and removed wooden and metal barricades, tents and other obstructions along a 500-metre stretch of Nathan Road. Around two hours after the operation started, only a handful of protesters remained at the edge of the site.
The road had been blocked for almost two months as pro-democracy protesters took to the streets to demand civil nomination for candidates for the city's next leader. China has said candidates will be vetted by a committee.
