Apple Daily: Beijing wants tough action on protest blacklist
Student protest leaders are on a Beijing blacklist that has been handed to “powerful people in Hong Kong” to be dealt with.
Alex Chow and Lester Shum of the Hong Kong Federation of Students and Joshua Wong of student activist group Scholarism are on the list, Apple Daily reported Tuesday, citing unnamed sources.
Chow and two other student leaders of the ongoing street protests were barred on Saturday from boarding a Cathay Pacific flight to Beijing to seek talks on political reform with the central government.
An airline representative said their mainland return permit had been revoked.
The purported blacklist contains the names, photos, identity card numbers and other personal details of pro-democracy activists, according to Apple Daily which said it had obtained a copy.
Ten “die-hards” from Occupy Central, the civil disobedience group which helped inspire the student protest, are also on the list, including lawyer Herman Tang, writer Chan Wai-yee and hedge fund manager Edward Chin and lecturer Shiu Ka Chun.
People on the list contacted by the newspaper said the photos are copies of their home return cards, suggesting mainland authorities have been collecting such information for some time.
China’s national security authorities want them dealt with by force if necessary, the report said.
It said Chow is under the most scrutiny, with his personal details and those of his family exposed.
Chow said he has never heard of such a list. If there is one, he said it would show Beijing is trying to intimidate the protesters with surveillance.
Chin described the purported list as “evil” and said he might go to mainland China during the Christmas holiday to see if he will be denied entry.
