HONG KONG: Seven police officers in Hong Kong were arrested on Wednesday (Nov 26) for the alleged assault of a pro-democracy protester last month.
The Hong Kong Police Force said in a statement on Wednesday that the personnel were arrested for “assault occasioning actual bodily harm”, following further investigation and seeking legal advice.
However, the police said “the complainant had confirmed his presence at an identification parade to be conducted (on Wednesday), but he failed to turn up”. The statement added that the police hopes “he will assist in our investigation work soonest”.
On Oct 15, local broadcaster TVB had aired footage of a group of men, purportedly plainclothes officers, hauling a handcuffed protester to a corner in Admiralty district and raining kicks and punches on him. The protester was later identified as Civic Party member Ken Tsang.
The policemen allegedly involved in the assault were removed from their current working positions while the authorities investigated the incident.
The probe is still ongoing, added the police.
