Britain to keep allowing sale of tear gas to HK

Britain has decided not to block the sale of tear gas to Hong Kong, Reuters reported.

The British government reviewed its export policy after the city’s police used the gas against pro-democracy protesters in September.

Foreign Office minister Hugo Swire told Parliament on Monday the only license held by an exporter at present does not breach rules used to control arms exports and will not be revoked.

Swire had said last month that a review was likely in light of the Hong Kong clashes.

He told Parliament Monday the government had not been able to verify pictures that appeared to show that some of the canisters used by Hong Kong police had been manufactured by a British firm.
