Wong, Tai on list of leading global thinkers
Scholarism co-founder Joshua Wong Chi-fung and Occupy Central co-founder Benny Tai Yiu-ting are featured on Foreign Policy’s list of “Leading global thinkers of 2014″.
They are cited in the category of Challengers for “making Beijing sweat”.
The magazine, published by the Washington Post Group in print and online, says Tai’s organization has provided the intellectual framework for the protests in Hong Kong, while Wong is the “youthful, charismatic leader” of the city’s “most important student movement”.
The theme of the sixth edition of the annual list, which features 100 individuals or teams, is “A world disrupted”.
Also listed among the Challengers is French economist Thomas Piketty. Foreign Policy said his insight that capital funnels wealth toward those who have it kicked off a heated international debate on inequality.
Alibaba Group founder Jack Ma is cited in the Moguls category for “out-innovating Amazon”.
Fellow tech mogul Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi Inc., is on the list for “shaking up China’s mobile market”. The firm released its first smartphone in August 2011 and has now overtaken Samsung Electronics as the country’s top seller of mobile phones, with a 30 percent market share.
Foreign Policy listed Chinese feminist Xiao Meili in the Advocates category for “bringing gender-based violence out of the closet”.
On Valentine’s Day in 2012, Xiao and two other women donned blood-spattered wedding gowns to protest against domestic violence. From September last year to March, she trekked from Beijing to Guangzhou to raise public awareness of the issue.
