China sends riot police to border over student blacklist ‘test’

More than 100 Chinese policemen were sent to the Lo Wu border checkpoint Wednesday after reports hundreds of democracy activists were planning to enter the mainland from different control points.

The activists planned to challenge a purported blacklist containing the names of 500 Hong Kong democracy protesters who are banned from the mainland, Sing Tao Daily reported Thursday.

On Saturday, three student leaders seeking to bring the democracy campaign directly to central authorities were barred from a Cathay Pacific flight to Beijing.

The trio were told by an airline representative that their home return permits had been canceled.

The incident prompted plans by other students to test Chinese immigration authorities by trying to enter the mainland, the report said.

On Wednesday afternoon, Shenzhen authorities fielded riot police armed with helmets and batons to the Lo Wu control point on the border with Hong Kong.

Witnesses said they saw anti-riot gear being brought in.

The officers were relieved by a unit which monitored the checkpoint until midnight, the report said.
