An article published in the overseas edition of People’s Daily has warned mainland tourists about drugstores in Hong Kong massively overcharging visiting customers.
The newspaper claims that certain recent cases have sparked discussion in the mainland, causing tourist confidence in Hong Kong to drop, reports the SCMP.
The article tells the story of a woman surnamed Zheng, who reportedly paid almost HKD40,000 for two bottles of herbal oil from a pharmacy in Causeway Bay.
Afterwards, she discovered the bottles should only cost HKD200 and asked the police to secure her a refund from the shop, but to no avail.
She made a report to the Hong Kong’s Consumer Council before leaving Hong Kong for the mainland.
In another cited case, a man from Jiangsu is said to have paid 10 times the market price for herbs at a store on Tsim Sha Tsui’s harbour front. He was apparently shown the price of a different product and ended up paying the higher cost.
The newspaper concluded by saying the only way confidence can be rebuilt is if Hong Kong stores charge all customers honestly.
