Exam topnotchers give high marks to democracy movement

Three of the top scorers in this year’s Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination are going to medical school while another plans to take up psychology.

All have democratic aspirations for Hong Kong, having taken part in last year’s Umbrella Movement.

Many medical students were at the scene, helping protesters after police fired tear gas and pepper spray, Ko Tsz-lok from Shun Tak Fraternal Association Leung Kau Kui College was quoted as saying by RTHK.

Ko is planning to study medicine in the University of Hong Kong (HKU).

Lam Ming-tuen from Queen’s College who is also going to the HKU medical school said he joined the democracy protests to understand the issues first-hand.

Another HKU medical school enrollee, Chin Hoi-yiu, the top scorer from St. Mary’s Canossian College, said the youth should understand society in order to influence it.

She said everyone lost when the election reform bill was rejected by Legco last month.

Chin’s Canossian College schoolmate, Wong Chi-yiu, who is pursuing psychology in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, said political reform is a long process that involves all people.

And Wong Hoi-shuen from St. Paul School (Lam Tin) said she supports the democracy movement even though her parents did not allow her to join the protests.

She said she did not expect the election reform bill to be defeated in such a lopsided manner.

Wong Chak-kui, 15, the youngest of the group and the top achiever from La Salle College, said he sat out the protests to focus on his studies.
