Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying is claiming support from China’s top legislator, saying the senior official “is very satisfied” with his administration.
Leung made the remark Monday after a meeting with National People’s Congress chairman Zhang Dejiang.
It was Leung’s first meeting with a senior Chinese official since a Beijing-inspired election reform plan for Hong Kong was vetoed by the Legislative Council last month.
Zhang “highly approved” of Leung’s work and that of his government, the unpopular Hong Kong leader was quoted as saying by Ming Pao Daily.
However, the official Xinhua news agency did not mention the meeting in a 400-word article published Monday evening.
Also, it did not say if the central government continues to support Leung’s administration.
The article did mention Leung’s comments on the economy.
It quoted him as saying the Hong Kong government will shift its focus to economic and livelihood issues in the remaining two years of his administration.
He said Hong Kong could play an important role in China’s ambitious project to build an Asia-Europe economic corridor, dubbed “One Belt, One Road”.
Also, Leung said he received a positive response in recent talks with pan-democrats who were responsible for the defeat of the election reform bill.
He expressed hope pan-democrats will work with the government and drop their campaign of non-cooperation.
Leung dismissed reports he will step down in January, saying Hong Kong media is used to spreading rumors.
