A water sample from a kindergarten in Sai Ying Pun has been found to contain excessive amount of lead, adding to the contamination scare in the city.

Tests on the sample taken from a boiler at the Yan Chai Hospital Kwok Chi Leung Kindergarten’s kitchen revealed 13 micrograms of lead per liter, Apple Daily reported.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) safety standard, there shouldn’t be more than 10 micrograms of lead per liter.

Wong Yuk-ying, the principal of the kindergarten, said the school bought the boiler from a local company in 2007. Some parts have been changed for maintenance since then, according to Wong.

She suspects that replaced parts may have contributed to the excessive amount of lead.

Following the test results, safety precautions have been put in place at the school. The boiler is no longer being used and students are being supplied with bottled water.

The Education Bureau plans to conduct blood tests on all 122 students in the nursery this Saturday. Parents have been asked to hand in their consent letters by Wednesday.

As of now, the Hong Kong government has tested water samples from 94 kindergartens.

Last week, a water sample from an electric water heater installed at Hong Kong Christian Service Kwun Tong Nursery was found to contain lead that was 10 times above the WHO limit.
