Several green groups are demanding the government choose a professional to head the Environmental Protection Department (EPD).

An Adminstrative Officer – Anissa Wong – has been at the job since 2006. The groups claim her lack of expertise has led to questionable decisions on environmental impact assessments of infrastructure projects.

They said departments, such as water supplies and highways, are headed by engineers so the EPD shouldn't be any different.

Billy Hau is the vice-chairman of the Conservancy Association and a member of the government's environmental advisory body, said decisions regarding airport runway was an example where opinions of ecologists were different.
