Local environmental groups held a mock picnic outside in Central to back their demand to turn part of a congested road in Central into a public space for pedestrians, trams and buses.
Paul Zimmerman, CEO of Designing Hong Kong, insisted that their proposal is practical and the 'picnic" was to illustrate the benefit of the move.
Designing Hong Kong, and three other groups, have filed an application with the Town Planning Board to revamp two kilometres of Des Voeux Road. They say it can help relieve traffic congestion and improve air quality there.
The proposal by the green groups comes after a former town planner, Sit Kwok-keung, called for the removal of trams from the area to ease traffic congestion.
