A number of people were arrested or invited for questioning after clashes during a “gou wu” shopping protest in Mong Kok last night.

They were allegedly involved in verbal and physical clashes with rivals in the pedestrian zone in Sai Yeung Choi Street South.

A man was seen with facial injuries and blood stains on his shirt. He was said to have interrupted a forum staged by supporters of the event to mark the 300th day of the campaign. The injured man was later escorted away by police.

The spontaneous and leaderless protests started in late November shortly after the police clearance of the Occupy site in Mong Kok. Participants, who often target mainland visitors to the city, gather under the guise of shopping to obstruct traffic in Mong Kok. “Gou wu” is the Putonghua pronunciation of “shopping” – or “buy objects”.

Meanwhile, Ronald Leung Kam-shing, a spokesman for the North District Parallel Imports Concern Group, who supported last night’s event, was seen being taken away with others by police.

Their removal to Mong Kok police station apparently upset the crowd, with some proposing to lay siege to the station.

As of midnight, dozens of people were gathered outside the station.
