An iconic yellow banner emblazoned with the slogan from last year’s democracy movement has made an appearance near a protest site ahead of the first anniversary of the sit-in.
The giant “I want genuine universal suffrage” banner, last seen on Lion Rock tunnel in October last year, resurfaced in Admiralty on Sunday with the words “Umbrella Movement” added, according to Apple Daily.
It measures two meters by 15 meters and was seen hanging from a footbridge between Admiralty and government headquarters.
Police removed the sign hours later. No one was arrested.
League of Social Democrats member Tsang Kin-shing said he and several fellow activists were responsible for putting it up.
They said they wanted to remind Hong Kong people about the struggle for democracy and the sacrifices of activists during the 79-day street occupation.
Meanwhile, a group is planning an exhibition of 60 objects collected during the protest, including yellow umbrellas and banners, according to Ming Pao Daily.
The three-week display will begin on Saturday in the headquarters of non-profit Woofer Ten in Shanghai Street in Yau Ma Tei and Foo Tak Building in Wan Chai.
A spokesman said the exhibit is aimed at helping citizens reflect on the movement and spur discussion of issues affecting Hong Kong.
