During the National Day fireworks this year, Hongkongers could have a sense of what it was like when Victoria Harbor was bombed by the Japanese army during World War II, Apple Daily reported Friday.
China celebrated last week the 70th anniversary of the victory against Japan, and that will also be the theme of the fireworks display Oct. 1 in Hong Kong.
The display will be divided into nine segments.
The most eye-catching one will use sirens and monochrome fireworks to make the audience feel they are in a war zone.
People will be astounded by this 36-second segment of the fireworks show, said Wilson Mao Wai-shing, a fireworks engineer and the chief executive of Pyromagic Multi-media Productions Ltd.
“It will create a strong contrast between war and peace. People who have never experienced war can have a sense of it,” Mao said.
“The siren alarm indicates the horror of war, and the thunder shows what it would have been like if Victoria Harbor were bombed by the Japanese army.”
The 23-minute fireworks show will cost HK$8 million, which will be fully covered by CT Environmental Group Ltd. (01363.HK), a waste treatment company backed by mainland capital.
The National Day fireworks celebration was canceled in the past two years because of the Lamma ferry disaster and the Umbrella movement.
The ferry sank during the National Day fireworks display in 2012, leaving 30 people dead and 92 people injured.
Some netizens have been reluctant to celebrate on National Day after that accident.
