The Civil Human Rights Front and several pro-democracy groups are planning a number of activities from next Monday to commemorate the first anniversary of the Occupy movement.

Protesters with yellow umbrellas will observe a 15-minute silence from 5:58 pm that evening, the time when police fired the first canister of tear gas against protesters one year ago.

A gathering will be held near the Legco complex to remember the 79-day occupation that called for "true universal suffrage" for Hong Kong. The protest was triggered by opposition against Beijing's political package for the 2017 CE election, which stressed on the need for a Nominating Committee to name candidates, and limited the number of candidates who could enter the race. That package was rejected by the Legco later in June.

Student groups such as Scholarism and the Federation of Students said they will hold a number of seminars at different venues, including the Legco protest area and Tamar Park from September 26 to the 30 to discuss Hong Kong’s future reform path.

James Hon from one of the groups, Citizen Charter, said they can't rule out the possibility of some people occupying key areas of the city again.

If people resort to radical action, it will be beyond their control, he said. But the organisers said they are only advocating peaceful assemblies.

The Occupy movement started earlier than scheduled on September 28 after police fired tear gas against crowds who flooded onto the Harcourt Road in Admiralty in support of student protesters.

The original Occupy Central protest against the political reform package was meant to start on October 1.
