A new think-tank has been set up with the ambition to increase public participation and transparency in urban planning decisions.

The new group, called the 'Centre for Democratic Community Planning', was co-founded by Civic Party lawmaker Kenneth Chan, the Chief Executive Officer of Designing Hong Kong Paul Zimmerman, and Edward Yiu, an associate professor of the Urban Studies Programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Chan said town planning has become confrontational, and said the current ‘top-down approach’ was antiquated.

He said there is often a lack of transparency with government plans, and people need access to information in order to understand the reasoning behind government proposals.
