The Hospital Authority is planning to test the tap water for lead at its children's hospitals, sources said.
Health Secretary Ko Wing-man said priority will be given to the hospitals that served children and long-time in-patients, as well as facilities built after 2005. He cited the Caritas Medical Centre in Sham Shui Po as an example that fulfills all these three criteria.
He said authorities do not have the capacity to carry out water tests at every public hospital.
The Secretary for Education, Eddie Ng, meanwhile said tests on tap water in kindergartens could start this week at the earliest.
The government said last week that all 980 kindergartens would have the water tested for lead. It agreed to the tests after excessive amounts of the heavy metal were found in the drinking water at some schools and public housing estates.
