Two armed and masked robbers beat an elderly man with a metal tool before fleeing with property worth HK$120,000 last night in the second burglary to hit Hong Kong’s exclusive The Peak district in two days.

The incident at an apartment on the La Hacienda estate, Mount Kellett Road came a day after HSBC’s Asia-Pacific chief executive Peter Wong Tung-shun lost HK$2.45 million in valuables when his Middle Gap Road residence, about 2km away, was raided by four burglars.

Last night, two robbers ransacked the home of Chui Wai-kwan, 67, stealing a watch worth HK$100,000 and HK$20,000 in cash. Chui was alerted to the robbery and encountered the pair at about 9.40pm. The robbers then beat Chui with a metal tool, leaving him with minor limb injuries.

The pair fled and the victim alerted security guards.

Police launched a search in the nearby countryside this morning, but found no suspects.

Chui later sought medical treatment at the nearby Matilda International Hospital.

A mainland Chinese man, 24, was arrested by police yesterday over the burglary at HSBC chief Wong’s home. Police are searching for three other men in connection with the case.

The cases were the latest in a string of burglaries or attempted break-ins targeting exclusive areas in the city, with previous attempts being made on the homes of the city’s richest man, Li Ka-shing, and the Indian and Australian consuls general.
