The Chief Executive, CY Leung, will be visiting Israel and the UK from October 12 to 17. During his stay in London, he will call on the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, Philip Hammond. However, there's no word on what they'll be discussing.
The visit comes amid growing local and international controversy over Beijing's and SAR government’s view of the One Country, Two Systems principle in Hong Kong.
Britain’s Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, was quoted by former Chief Secretary Anson Chan last year as saying that Britain will honour its 1984 pledge to "mobilise the international community and pursue every legal and other avenue available" if China breaches the agreement to uphold the One Country, Two Systems principle. However, Beijing had repeatedly asked London to stay away from the its former colony's affairs as it no longer has a role to play.
In Israel, Leung will meet the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu and visit technology enterprises.
The Chief Secretary, Carrie Lam, will be the Acting Chief Executive during Leung's absence.
