Around 100 protesters rallied outside the Tsim Sha Tsui Clock Tower on Thursday over what they described as an erosion of Hong Kong’s core values.
Members of the group, Defend Hong Kong, dressed in black and sang songs during the rally.
One of its members, Civic Party legislator Kwok Ka-ki, said many people took part in the protest because of recent events such as the decision by the Hong Kong University Council to block the appointment of legal scholar Johannes Chan as a pro-vice-chancellor.
“We chose today because, instead of celebrating… National Day, we would like to have a chance to speak up again, that we need to protect the core values of Hong Kong.”
Kwok said there’s a “deep sentiment” in Hong Kong that its core values are being hampered.
