The Housing Authority on Friday awarded five bids to contractors for building public and Home Ownership Scheme flats. This includes two contracts that were originally planned for August, but were put on hold because of the lead water crisis.
Speaking after a meeting of the authority’s Tendering Committee, chairman Cheung Tat-tong said they did not consider bids from four contractors linked to the discovery of excessive lead in drinking water at 11 housing estates.
The authority had earlier said soldering material on water pipes was one of the sources of the lead contamination in fresh water supplies.
Cheung said four of the contracts exceeded their original budget by about HK$1 billion due to the decision to keep contractors linked to lead water out of the bidding. He said the authority’s Building Committee would need to approve additional funds before the tenders could be confirmed.
