The President of the Legislative Council, Tsang Yok-sing, has defended his decision to allow outspoken independent lawmaker Wong Yuk-man to ask the Chief Executive, CY Leung, "when he will die" during a question-and-answer session in the council on Thursday morning.
Pro-Beijing unionist Wong Kwok-kin from the Federation of Trade Unions had urged Tsang to disallow the question on the grounds that it could have been offensive to Leung.
However, Tsang decided not to block the question, and Leung then quoted excerpts from a Mao Zedong poem to wish Wong a long and healthy life.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Tsang explained that he had elected to allow Wong Yuk-man to field the question instead of spending time deciding whether it was appropriate. He added that it was commonplace to see political exchanges during such sessions.
Asked whether he allowed Wong Yuk-man’s question because his younger brother, Tsang Tak-sing, had been removed as secretary for home affairs in July, Tsang Yok-sing dismissed such speculation as “absurd".
Tsang Yok-sing also criticised Wong Kwok-kin for trying to step in, saying he should have left it to him, Leung and the public to judge whether such a question was appropriate.
