The leader of the Civic Party, Alan Leong, has said that 2015 was a "year of awakening" for Hong Kong, and 2016 will define the city's future. Speaking on RTHK's “Letter to Hong Kong”, Leong said the chief executive's recent appointment of Arthur Li to chair the University of Hong Kong Council could bring "nothing but harm" to HKU. He said CY Leung's insistence on Mr Li's appointment was troubling.
“CY Leung wants by such a showdown of his powers to make Hong Kong people feel powerless, and resigned to the fate of having to succumb. I am here to assure CY Leung that his wish will not be granted. Hong Kong people will not yield," Leong said.
"The power of the powerless will overwhelm him, and he will not have the last laugh. I see his recent irrational and schizophrenic behaviours as evidence of his desperation and show that he is already a spent force.”
Leong also warned the central government against interfering with Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy under the "One Country, Two Systems" principle.
He said if Beijing doesn't use self-restraint in its dealings with the SAR, nothing will be left of the territory's core values and institutions. He said that would leave Hong Kong as just another Chinese city, unable to play a unique role in the country's modernisation.
