Michael Tien, a local deputy to the National People's Congress, says he will ask central and Shenzhen authorities whether five missing Hong Kong residents have been detained on the mainland.
The five people are all linked to a local bookshop known for selling titles critical of Beijing.
On Friday a shareholder of the store, Lee Bo, was reported to the police as missing. He was last seen on Wednesday in Chai Wan. Over the past few months, four others linked to the store have gone missing.
A leading mainland specialist at Chinese University, Willy Lam, told RTHK on Friday he suspects Lee has been taken across the border by mainland public security officers. He said Beijing is paranoid about the media and publishing houses in Hong Kong, because they can reveal embarrassing information about officials and their families.
Tien, a New People's Party lawmaker, said he will write to the public security bureau in Shenzhen, as well as the central government's liaison office in Hong Kong, to follow up on the matter.
