The acting Secretary for Security, John Lee, said on Sunday that the police would be expanding the scope of their investigation into the disappearance of a Hong Kong bookseller, but it was not possible to give details about every line of inquiry.

Lee Bo’s wife reported him missing on Friday, saying she had last seen him on Wednesday. He is reported to have talked to her since by telephone, speaking in Putonghua.

The shop sells books which are critical of the central government, and there is speculation Lee was abducted by mainland security agents and taken across the border.

Four other people connected to the bookshop have been reported missing in the last few months.

John Lee said the police would be looking into who Lee had spoken to or met shortly before his disappearance.

He also sought to reassure people that mainland security officials have no right to operate in the SAR. "In Hong Kong, the only people who can exercise the power of the law are the legal enforcement agencies of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government," he said.
