A former convenor of the student activist group Scholarism, and another of its member, have each been ordered to perform 80 hours of community service after they pleaded guilty to taking part in an unlawful assembly in 2013.

The offence was committed when Ivan Lam and Li Chung-chak were protesting outside the venue of a consultation session by Chief Executive CY Leung on his policy address.

Sha Tin Court heard that they had charged the police cordon and tried to remove metal fences at the scene.

In passing sentence, magistrate Ivy Chui cited a probation officer as saying that both defendants cared about current affairs, and had promised to use legal and mild actions to express their demands in future.

Speaking after the hearing, Lam said the sentence was reasonable and he did not intend to appeal. But, he said he would refrain from "being on the frontline" for the time being.
