Citybus and First Bus have pulled five electric buses from service just weeks after hitting the road.
The bus operators say the exit doors automatically open when pressure is applied in the centre.
The buses are being checked by their mainland-based manufacturer, BYD, which is partly backed by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway.
The electric buses are subsidised by the government, which wants to cut carbon emissions.
