The vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, Peter Mathieson, said on Friday that he sees no sign of erosion of academic freedom at the institution, a week after former education secretary, Arthur Li, was named chairman of its governing body despite strong opposition. 

He also downplayed concerns that the appointment of Li may intensify conflicts at the university. 

Speaking to the media at the university, Mathieson said the choice of the chairman of the governing body - the University of Hong Kong Council - up to the government and the chancellor - Chief Executive CY Leung.

Mathieson said it was healthy to hear different voices about the appointment but everyone has to work constructively for the future of the university.
