Legal sector lawmaker Dennis Kwok says he will write to the Secretary for Security on Monday to enquire about the disappearance of five people linked to a Beijing-critical bookshop based in Causeway Bay.
On Friday a shareholder of the store, Lee Bo, was reported to the police as missing. He was last seen on Wednesday in Chai Wan. Over the past few months, four others linked to the store have gone missing.
“The Secretary for Security needs to investigate the matter immediately and find out under what circumstances this person was taken away,” he said. “What is his status now and who is holding him against his will.”
A leading mainland specialist at Chinese University, Willy Lam, told RTHK on Friday he suspects Mr Lee has been taken across the border by mainland Public Security officers. He said Beijing is paranoid about the media and publishing houses in Hong Kong, because they can reveal embarrassing information about officials and their families.
Mr Kwok, who is a member of the Civic Party, also said the case had made Hong Kong people more sceptical about the setting-up of a joint immigration facility for the high speed rail link to Guangzhou. He said the facility would make it easier for mainland officials to take people over the border for law enforcement purposes.
The Chief Secretary Carrie Lam has refused to comment on the incident, saying only that the Police are investigating the case.
