The Legislative Council's House Committee has decided that the council can go ahead and discuss the disappearance of five people connected to a Causeway Bay bookstore.

Lee Bo and four other staff members of the bookstore, which sold titles critical of mainland leaders, are believed to have been abducted to the mainland by its security agents.

Pan-democratic lawmakers called the incident the most serious since the handover, which may decide the fate of the One Country, Two Systems principle. Pro-establishment lawmakers remained silent during the committee's discussion.

Civic Party legislator Dennis Kwok said the disappearance of Lee and the others is not just a random case of missing person but one that involved potential breach of the Basic Law.

But the committee's decision still needs the assent of the council's president. Once that is given, the council can go ahead to discuss the matter. It is scheduled to hold its next meeting on January 13.
