Alan Leong speaks to RTHK's Timmy Sung

Civil Party leader Alan Leong has called on Beijing to heed the demand of Hong Kong bookseller Gui Minhai’s daughter to release him.

Angela Gui has spoken in Washington before the Congressional-Executive Commission on China appealing for the United States’ help in the release of her father.

Leong told RTHK’s Timmy Sung that Beijing should heed her call – even though he believed she was trying to embarrass the mainland leadership.

“Whether that is wise or not is really up to her to judge,” he said.

“But I suppose the best thing to do for Beijing to establish its credibility amongst the international community is not to high-handedly infringe into personal freedom and liberty.”

“I think the Chinese leadership is obviously, evidently, minded to establish China as a credit-worthy member of the international community. What can be better [than to] you follow the norms of international community – namely, you respect people’s freedoms and liberty and the rule of law?”
