DAB members run a mile from Beijing KTV controversy

Lawrence Ma Yan-kwok, chairman of the China-Australia Legal Exchange Foundation, was in trouble recently after two members of the group were found in the company of several sexy women during a recent visit to Beijing. Ma is a member of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, but the episode was so controversial that the party’s former chairman, Tam Yiu-chung, appeared reluctant to come to Ma’s defence on Wednesday. “Ma is only an ordinary member and he was not going to [Beijing] in the capacity of the DAB,” he said, adding the row had nothing to do with the party which has some 30,000 members in town. Meanwhile, another DAB lawmaker, Ann Chiang Lai-wan, said she had visited KTV lounges as well when she was in the capital for meetings, but was not aware if there were any women or men “accompanying” the customers. “I don’t know if the KTV lounge [the two members] went to is a proper one as the ladies we saw [in the pictures] were clothed … It is hard to judge,” she said.

Junius Ho also has encounter with cute ladies – in Tokyo

While a number of Beijing-friendly lawyers have apparently had great fun in a KTV lounge in the capital, another pro-establishment solicitor, Junius Ho Kwan-yiu, was recently seen surrounded by some cute ladies – in Japan. Ho, an outspoken district councillor, was invited by ViuTV to Tokyo last month to shoot the latest episode of reality show Travel with Rivalsalongside student activist Agnes Chow Ting of the newly formed group Demosisto. In a bid to give her middle-aged travel partner a culture shock, Chow arranged for Ho to visit a maid cafe where waitresses are dressed in maid costumes and treat customers as their masters. Ho was apparently unimpressed by the curry he was served, which he could only enjoy after reciting a Japanese spell to turn it pink. He was later asked to take pictures with the female “servants” by performing cute poses. “I will not go to these cafes any more in Hong Kong,” Ho told the producers of the show, which was aired on Tuesday night. Well, at least Ho should be glad that the photos did not cost him his political career, like the lawyers from the China-Australia Legal Exchange Foundation.

‘Localist’ bus hits a snag – outside Legco complex

The debate over the meaning of “localism” has been heating up recently with prominent figures across the political spectrum trying to wrest the upper hand in defining the ideology. With the Legislative Council elections nearing, lawmaker Christopher Chung Shu-kun of the pro-Beijing Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong has wasted no time in driving a truck into the debate. Chung’s truck is not of the proverbial kind but a fully-fledged vehicle that will be touring around Hong Kong Island over the next month to promote what he calls “true localism”, which does not necessitate the city becoming independent. The truck driver, however, got off to a bad start during its unveiling outside the Legislative Council complex as police officers fined him for illegal parking. Chung, who’s no stranger to publicity blunders, said officers imposed a fine because many people in the Legco building filed complaints. “That’s the nature of politics,” he said. It is rumoured that Chung will not be recommended by the DAB to run in the Hong Kong Island constituency, where he currently holds a seat, in the Legco race. The lawmaker, however, dismissed the claim saying the party still hadn’t made a final decision. “I’m not worried,” he said.
