The collapse of the huge roof at a City University’s sports facility could have caused an unmitigated tragedy as about 300 students were to take part in a banquet there on Saturday.

Two people were injured in the incident on Friday.

A website run by the university’s students stated last week that some students who took an exam inside the facility had complained of objects falling from the roof. But the exam went ahead anyway. The hall can accommodate up to 900 students during an exam.

After the roof collapsed, a three-member panel was set up to probe the incident. But the number was increased to five after the university allowed two students – an undergraduate and a postgraduate – to join the team.

The Secretary for Education, Eddie Ng, who rushed to the university after the roof collapsed, said a preliminary investigation could be completed in as little as two weeks.
