Hong Kong food safety regulator has been dubbed a 'paper tiger' for its slow and passive response to the growing gutter oil scandal that's feared to have affected several major importers here.

Lawmaker Helena Wong has also accused the Centre for Food Safety of failing to carry out its gatekeeping role, as it has yet to provide the public with a comprehensive list of food companies and restaurants that may have been affected.

So far, Maxim's pineapple buns and curry dumplings from the Taiwanese company Baifang Yunji have been pulled from the shelves over suspicions that the products contained recycled or tainted oil.
