The government is investigating whether a local trading company has committed any crime in apparently exporting animal-grade lard to Taiwan, as being fit for human consumption.
The Centre for Food Safety said a Yuen Long-based manufacturer, Upswing, had sold low grade lard to a trading company --
Globalway -- which then exported the product to the Taiwanese company at the centre of a growing 'gutter oil' scandal.
But a consultant with the Centre, Dr Ho Yuk-yin said documents showed that the Kaohsiung-based firm, Chang uann, had been told the lard was of a higher grade than it actually was.
