Alex Chow: If the Government does not respond to the request of the students who participate in a strike, HKFS will approach the CTU about the possibility of holding a general workers’ strike.
Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS) will hold a tertiary students’ strike on September 22nd. The strike is aimed at demanding the Administration speak to public aspirations for real universal suffrage. The Secretary-General Alex Chow Yong-kang says in an exclusive with HT that the proposed students’ strike will last for 1 week. However, if the Central Government and HKSAR do not respond to the request, the strike may not have an ending date. HKFS will even upgrade their civil disobedience and may approach the Hong Kong Confederation of Trade Unions (CTU) to discuss the possibility of workers’ strike, shifting the fight to the a broader swathe of society.
Alex Chow claims that the students’ strike will be held in the University Mall of CUHK for the first few days. Later the event will move to the Civic Square in the Central Government Complex. During the strike, there will be lectures speaking on democracy and righteousness. The secondary school students’ strike organized by Scholarism will join the HKFS strike later. Alex Chow mentioned that even the students in those universities with less political activity have responded enthusiastically to the strike plan. He expects that the number of people joining the coming strike will probably be more than the 8000 people in the “anti-national education strike” in 2012.
Alex Chow, now only 24, is standing on the frontline of opposition to the Central Government. He admits that his family worries about his safety a lot. He observes people following him recently. “Some even let you know (they are following him). They are not reporters, but are public security from China.” He also says his phone is tapped. But, Chow says the path he is taking is “something I need to do”, and he will not be deterred by these threats.
