Some highlights from the weekend you may have missed as Fanny Law rues her offspring, Long Hair rues his haircut and Democrats get hosed.

CASSY CHAU

This is not what Fanny Law expected

Fanny Law Fan Chiu-fun (羅范椒芬), former Secretary for Education and Manpower who promoted liberal studies, is disappointed in the course now. She said in a radio programme that the course was to train up the critical thinking ability of the students. However, she thinks the current course is just focusing on political issues.

All because of his hair

“Long hair” Leung Kwok-hung (梁國雄) (GC- New Territories East, LSD) seeks a judicial review concerning the shearing of his iconic long hair whilst in jail. Leung was jailed after his conviction for his role in disrupting a public forum held in 2011 was upheld. Leung claims officers of the Correctional Services Department insisted in cutting Leung’s long hair despite his objections. Leung is not happy for losing his trademark, and believes the department is intruding on his human rights and employs gender discrimination. He therefore seeks a judicial review urging the Government to abandon the related policy and make compensation for his loss.

Drilling practice for protesters this time

The New School for Democracy organized a drill, which simulated Police deploying water cannons for clearance of protesters. A few pan-dems, including Albert Ho Chun-yan (何俊仁) (FC- District Council 2nd, DP), Emily Lau Wai-hing (劉慧卿) (GC- New Territories East) participated in it. Organizer Andrew To Kwan-hang (陶君行) said the drill is not only to prepare protesters for participating in Occupy Central, but to equipped them with ways to deal with the Police’s clearance practice. “Even the police have to drill to prepare for Occupy Central.”

The has shades of  methodologies from the US 1960s civil rights movement when peaceful protesters would be verbally and physically abused by fellow organisers to prepare them for actual abuse they would suffer in standing up for human rights.
