David Beckham caught the attention of seven million Hongkongers when hearrived unannounced in the city last month. We could only speculate about what he was doing here, especially when he paid a visit to the Li & Fung offices.
But now we know: the football superstar has signed a joint venture with Li & Fung’s Global Brands Group!
“We won’t be building just one brand. Creating a sportswear or underwear line with David would be great but we want to do more,” said Global Brands chief executive Bruce Rockowitz, according to the Guardian.
The deal will cover everything from apparel to food, and electronics to kidswear, because why wouldn’t you want your sandwich to have Beckham’s face on it?
Beckham will own one half of the venture while Global Brands Group will own the other.
“Throughout my career I’ve had quite a few sponsorship deals,” said Beckham at a press conference, reports the SCMP. “This takes it to a different level for me. I’ve gone from being in a sponsorship deal to being an owner.”
But don’t just expect Beckham’s face on the new venture’s products: other “superstars” will be singing onto the venture, creating all-new possibilities for celebrity-branded products. Posh Spice toilet roll, anyone?
