Leung expects tough fight when police clear protest site
Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying expects “fierce resistance” to police when they help bailiffs to enforce a court order to clear Occupy protesters, Bloomberg reported Monday.
“As the number of people falls in the later stages of the movement, the remaining crowd will be more and more fierce,” Leung told reporters Sunday in Shenzhen, according to a transcript of his remarks posted on the government’s website.
“The government and police don’t want any bodily harm or conflict to happen when carrying out duties.”
Leung repezated his call for demonstrators to disperse as police prepare to clear barricades at the main protest site in Admiralty.
“The students’ demands and enthusiasm, even passion, I think it’s better used on the remaining political reform work we have, and hope that they can participate in our next round of consultation,” Leung said.
Tommy Cheung, a representative of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, told Bloomberg the protesters aren’t planning to withdraw before possible clearing actions this week.
A court granted an injunction on Dec. 1 to a bus company to clear parts of Connaught Road, Harcourt Road and Cotton Tree Drive to permit traffic flow.
