Minority rights activist to turn herself in with Occupy leaders
Occupy movement volunteer Fermi Wong said she will join the three Occupy Central leaders in turning themselves in to police on Wednesday, Ming Pao Daily reported.
Wong, who founded the minority rights group Unison, said she had done a lot of “stupid things” for the Occupy movement, such as trying to persuade some members of Executive Council to resign and asking them to reopen “Civic Square” in front of the government offices to the public.
She said some of the Exco members were willing to receive her calls or meet with her. One Exco member even undertook to discuss the proposal to reopen Civic Square with other Exco members, Wong said. However, she has heard nothing about it since then.
Wong also contacted Exco convenor Lam Woon-kwong in late September to ask him to confirm rumors that police would shoot demonstrators to clear the protest site.
She said their phone conversation was mentioned on social media minutes later. Wong said she believed that someone eavesdropped on the conversation, the newspaper said.
Wong, a social worker, gave speeches at the Occupy sites and provided counseling to students who had been arrested.
“All these young people gave such a lot of themselves but didn’t receive any response,” Wong said.
She criticized Chief Executive Leung Chun-Ying for not truthfully reflecting Hongkongers’ demand for universal suffrage to the central government and said he should resign to take responsibility for the result.
The co-founders of Occupy Central – Benny Tai Yiu-ting, Reverend Chu Yiu-ming and Dr. Chan Kin-man — said Tuesday they would surrender to the police on Wednesday to accept the legal consequences of leading the civil disobedience movement.
They also urged student protesters to retreat from the Occupy sites.
